In Potsdam, sensors are being installed on 150 urban trees to measure soil moisture and make it available via a digital platform. The aim of the project is to control irrigation in a more targeted manner and to promote the well-being of trees that are stressed by urban conditions and climatic challenges such as drought, compacted soils and high temperatures. In addition to classic urban trees, so-called climate trees are also being observed in order to compare their climate adaptability and to develop a site-appropriate tree species list for Potsdam in the long term. The project, funded by the “Adaptation of urban spaces to climate change” program, will provide publicly accessible moisture data from the beginning of next year and supports Potsdam’s strategy for sustainable urban greening.
